When I think back on my favorite photos—of my family, of my clients, of everyday life—they’re rarely the posed ones. Sure, the “smile at the camera” shot has its place, but the moments that make me pause are the in-between ones. The giggles after the “cheese,” the way kids look at each other right before they run out the door, the quiet concentration while they color. These little slices of life are what we end up treasuring the most.
As photographers, we’re trained to see these moments differently. We don’t stop snapping when the posed photo is done—we keep watching, waiting, noticing. Because often, the magic is in what happens just after. The nervous laughter, the relaxed shoulders, the genuine sparkle in someone’s eyes—those are the images that tell the truest story.
Years ago, I read about a photography project that has stayed with me. A photographer stopped strangers on the street and asked to take their portrait. The first image was always posed—a polite smile, a stiff moment in front of the camera. Then, the photographer gave each person a genuine compliment and immediately took a second shot. The difference was stunning. Side by side, you could see the contrast between a forced smile and a real one. The second images radiated warmth, authenticity, and joy.
I love this idea—not just for photography, but for life. Words of encouragement, little compliments, small moments of kindness… they change people. I try to give at least five compliments a day. Sometimes it’s as simple as, “I love your glasses,” or “That color looks amazing on you.” And just like in that photography project, the visible shift in someone’s posture, their expression, their whole presence—it’s remarkable.
This way of noticing the in-between is something I carry into my work and something I’ll be teaching in my upcoming continuing education class at Illinois Valley Community College. Because capturing an event, a season, or a day isn’t just about the big posed moments—it’s about the subtle details in between that really paint the full picture.
So here’s my little challenge for you this week: pay attention to the in-between. Notice the glance, the giggle, the gesture. And if you can—offer a kind word along the way. You might be surprised at how beautiful those little moments become.
